Dental Hygienist Services
This department has two key roles –
Dental Therapist and Dental Hygienists
The hygienists play a core role in the health of our patients and have the following roles and responsibilities:
- According to the Academy of Periodontology, 85%-90% of the population is in some state of gingivitis (gum disease) or periodontitis (bone loss). Unfortunately, only 7% are being treated in general dental practice today. Active periodontal disease will progress if left untreated. Research studies now show significant links between periodontal disease and systemic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Many patients are totally unaware they are infected with the disease as symptoms can be “invisible” and painless. The loss of teeth due to periodontal disease can happen quickly and quietly and can go unnoticed without regular dental care. With your permission, your blood pressure will be taken at the start of your appointment every six months, and we will help identify any risk factors to systemic diseases.
- Our hygienists are highly trained in the treatment of periodontal disease. The main cause is plaque – a sticky film of bacteria. Symptoms include red, swollen gums which bleed easily, a bad taste in the mouth, and bad breath. Not all patients will have these symptoms, and most patients are unaware of the fact that they have the disease.
- Hygiene Therapy: Removing calculus (tartar) from teeth – this is done by a technique called scaling and polishing.
- Disinfection Therapy is provided for patients with aggressive periodontal disease. This involves the use of antiseptics and antibiotics, and is very effective for patients in the advanced stage of the disease.
- Laser treatment (carried out by the dentist) is also an effective treatment for patients in the advanced stage of periodontal disease.
- Teaching patients good oral hygiene techniques – individually tailored to specific needs.
- Analysing your diet and offering advice to prevent decay. As well as being qualified as a dental hygienist, our dental therapist plays a crucial role in the practice. Her roles include:
- Applying materials to teeth such as fluoride and fissure sealants to prevent decay.
- Taking dental radiographs.
- Placing restorations such as fillings in both children and adults.
- Extracting deciduous teeth (children’s teeth).
